Gran Canaria

An island made for active tourism

Forget the beach for a moment.

Sunshine, the Atlantic, beaches — Gran Canaria has all of that. But leave the coast and head for the mountains, and you discover a completely different island: one that seems almost designed by nature for cycling. Three reasons: the climate, the terrain and the ecosystem built around sport.

Climate

A season that doesn’t stop.

Stable, mild temperatures all year round. When winter makes outdoor training complicated in much of Europe, Gran Canaria’s season simply carries on — cycling, running, swimming in the Atlantic and triathlon, twelve months a year.

Terrain

Mountains rising straight from the sea.

Leave your hotel at sea level and you’re soon climbing through ravines, volcanic landscapes, villages and pine forests towards the island’s highest point at almost 2,000 metres. The official cycling map lists 18 major climbs — and one official route takes you around the whole island in roughly 190 km.

Pico de las Nieves

22 km

From Ingenio, average gradient 7.3%.

Guayadeque

20 km

Almost 20 km at an average of 7.4%.

Pinos de Gáldar

30 km

Thirty kilometres of climbing.

Around the island

190 km

One of the official cycling routes.

Road, MTB & gravel

Same island, three experiences.

Volcanic origins have created forest tracks, rocky sections, ravines and mountain trails for MTB. Gravel connects secondary roads and tracks to parts of the island most visitors never reach.

One day road. One day MTB. One day gravel.

The ecosystem

Sport made easy.

Bike-friendly hotels with storage, maintenance areas and recovery facilities. Specialist rental centres with road bikes, MTBs and e-bikes, workshops and guided tours. Local guides who ride these roads every week. And everything else of an established destination: an international airport, transfers, restaurants, spas and medical services.

Events

Sport is part of island life.

Gran Fondo Pico de las Nieves, Gran Canaria Bike Week, EPIC Gran Canaria, Desafío La Titánica, Challenge Mogán, the Vuelta Ciclista al Norte and Transgrancanaria Bike — behind the calendar stand clubs, organisers, guides, rental companies and hotels. That is what makes an active destination.

Bring your helmet, bring your legs.

Gran Canaria will provide the rest. Join us at CycleSummit Sports, 6–9 March 2027.
